John Knox Christian School Secondary Campus
New Westminster, BC
John Knox Christian School’s location in the predominantly industrial area of lower Twelfth in New Westminster greatly influenced the design. The steeply sloping landscape combines retaining in the form of industrially styled architectural gabion baskets and concrete feature walls with integrated seating on terraced plazas and planting aligned to the building facade. As the first redevelopment in the area, extensive offsite work was also undertaken with all new urban sidewalks complete with soil cells to accommodate adjacent street tree health and longevity. Within the school proper, a central courtyard provides private space with integrated seat walls and space for outdoor classroom opportunities. Perimeter planting provides partial screening to views from the courtyard to the adjacent industrial neighbourhood, while maximizing the flexibility of the space for staff and students.
